Expansion of Heart2Heart

After a successful year, Heart2Heart quickly established a presence in the Vancouver area. At the beginning of the school year, Heart2Heart already had over 70 members consisting of students from St. George's, Crofton House, York House, and other Vancouver schools. We were determined to continue our mission to establish hope and spread compassion. All the members were excited to join our organization and to make differences in the lives of others.

St. George's Idol

Co-hosted with St. George's Multicultural Club in March, Saints Idol attracted many talented singers and performers. After a preliminary audition with over 30 participants, the judges narrowed the competition to 11 finalists. All of the participants were very talented vocally, singing songs of different languages including Chinese, Engliah and Korean. The finals of the competition was held in the auditorium at St. George's. A $2 entrance donation helped Heart2Heart raise over $200. The entire show was filled with melodious tunes and surprises. Gifted guest performers included pianist Melvin Loong, DJ Legit Tom Zheng, and RiceCube Justin Ko. The Event was an amazing effort from the Multicultural organization board, and Heart2Heart was very glad to join their success in this event. Hopefully, in 2009, Saints Idol will receive greater results!

Hong Kong Education Board Talk Session

Heart2Heart was invited by the Hong Kong Education Board to be guest speakers at a talk session targeted towards students. 8 members of Heart2Heart were in Hong Kong at the time and they all attended this event. The main objective of the talk session was to influence and bring a new perspective to Hong Kong students about community service. Because the Hong Kong education system has a strong emphasis on academics, the Education Board recently began a project to bring more extracurricular work for their students. Heart2Heart was very pleased to share with the students our experiences and initiatives. After the event, we felt that we truly echoed our mission statement. It felt rewarding to bring to students in Hong Kong our enthusiasm and passion about making a difference.

Ice Breaking Care - Bijie Snow Storm Relief

Honourable Member of Parliament, Raymond Chan, invited Heart2Heart to join his initiative in bringing aid to the victims of the devastation caused by the snow storms in China in early 2008. Heart2Heart was thrilled to be able to be a part of this venture, because we realized the difficulty of absolute helplessness that the victims were facing and we believed in bringing back hope to their lives. Moreover, we were eager to provide aid particularly to those children who may have lost homes, parents, and a chance for education. Therefore, Heart2Heart contributed $20,000 from our emergency funds to the Ice Breaking Care Relief project.

Shortly after in March, during Spring Break, Heart2Heart sent a team of 10 members to join Mr. Raymond Chan's trip to China.

First Stop - Beijing

Heart2Heart joined Raymond Chan's team at Beijing Int'l Airport. The morning following our arrival in Beijing, we all visited the Canadian embassy. We 10 students from Canada had a unique experience speaking with the Canadian ambassador.

That afternoon, Marco Chen accompanied Raymond Chan to meet with Chinese government officials. Later on, Jackson Chow met with the Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister. During dinner, Jacky Ng and Anna Lam met with the local Beijing official. It was an honour for us students to be able to be in contact with such political figures. We all agreed that this was an incredible experience.
